Neutering

One of the main aims of Cats Protection is the neutering of cats to prevent unwanted litters of kittens and in fact Cats Protection believes that having your cat neutered is an essential part of responsible cat ownership. To this end all cats and kittens (when old enough) which pass through our hands are neutered. Cats Protection recommend neutering from 4/5 months of age.

Facts & figures about Neutering

Cats can become sexually active from just 4 months of age

The length of pregnancy in a cat is only 9 weeks

A cat can have up to 3 litters a year with possibly 5 or 6 kittens per litter

Pregnancy and motherhood are very physically demanding for a cat – repeated and early pregnancies take their toll

Cats will breed with their brothers, sisters, mothers & fathers

It is not beneficial for a cat to have “just one litter” before being spayed

The benefits of neutering

Neutered male cats are

Less likely to roam

Less likely to fight

Less likely to contact serious diseases such as Feline Immunodeficiency virus (FIV) or Feline Leukaemia virus (FeLV) through fighting

Less likely to display territorial behaviour such as spraying

Neutered female cats

Unable to get pregnant and have unwanted litters of kittens

Less likely to contact diseases such as FIV & FeLV spread by biting

Do not call or wail as unneutered queens do when in season

Neutering vouchers

Our branch will help people in need on low income living in our area with neutering vouchers towards the cost of getting their cat neutered.

We also may help with the cost of neutering  farm /feral cats – Trap, Neuter & Return. This may involve the lending of traps and advice on catching the cats
